ABOUT TOWN CRYING AND THE AUSTRALIAN GUILD
The Ancient and Honourable Guild of Australian Town Criers was established in 1989 to preserve and promote the tradition of town crying in Australia. The Guild organises annual National Town Crier Championships, where participants compete in categories such as Champion of Champions, Loudest Cry, and Most Extravagant Outfit. These events celebrate the rich history and ceremonial aspects of town crying.
Historically, Town Criers served as the primary source of news dissemination, especially when literacy rates were low. They were protected by law, as harming a Town Crier was considered equivalent to harming the Monarch. In Australia, the tradition continues, with many local councils appointing official Town Criers to perform ceremonial duties at civic functions.
The Guild plays a crucial role in maintaining this tradition, ensuring that the art of Town Crying remains a vibrant part of Australia's cultural heritage.
